In the Image of God

One of the most perplexing questions haunting man is "Where did I come from, and why am I here?" In answer to that seemingly inborn question, God gives a quick and simple answer right at the beginning of His revealed word. In a simple and eloquent statement God said, "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness...so God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them" (Genesis 1:26-27). In the detailed account of the same event given in the very next chapter of Genesis, it is recorded, "and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Gen. 2:7). Of no other creature was this type of language used. Man is unique, made in the very image of the Creator, specially created, in a different way than were the animals. The psalmist catches this thought with the words, "I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well" (139th Psalm, v. 14). Man has been given a mind and spirit different from that of animals. It has been given to us for the purpose of bringing glory to our Maker. We are from God and we are going back to God to be judged according to the things we do here. Our purpose for being here is to glorify God. When you face Him on that day of judgment will you be able to say that you have glorified Him with your life here on earth?
