("...that great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth" Rev. 17:18)
Remember, it was a Roman judge who gave the order to crucify Jesus the Messiah. It was a Roman puppet king who had James beheaded to the pleasure of the Jewish leaders. But it was Nero who began the persecution of Christians in earnest when he accused them of starting the fire which burned much of Rome in 64AD. It is reported that Nero caused Christians to be daubed with flammable substance, impaled on poles, and then burned as illumination for his festivities.
After Nero, there were several other strong, concerted efforts by succeeding Roman emperors to wipe out this fast spreading sect called Christianity.
Rome was the seat of the greatest threat to life and liberty of the followers of Christ after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD.
Rome, too, would taste the wrath of God in the prophecies of the Revelation. She was destroyed from within and without by the 5th century AD.
